Hi friends!
It may come as a surprise but I actually really struggle with the concept of stickers. Yes, I have been making an epic booty-load of stickers the past few months...but I struggle. I don't struggle with the design or the execution. I struggle with the MORALITY of stickers.
You're probably like, "stickers don't have morals, Al". Sure, they are inanimate objects. What I struggle with is concept of create more plastic for the sake of art and creating.
A few years back I decided to make a New Years resolution (something I rarely do) to minimize my consumption of single-use plastic and plastic in general. As I've continued to make art of many forms, sustainability has continued to stay at the forefront of my core beliefs. In pottery, this might look like using less water or recycling clay. In packaging, I've been opting for more compostable and recyclable materials. In building, we're generally using reclaimed materials.
In short, I like stickers but stickers are vinyl and vinyl is plastic and I don't like making more plastic. So what's a girl to do?
Welp, here is what I'm going to do.... I'm going to make the damn stickers and here's why. Stickers are creating minimal waste compared to other products like plastic packaging. You slap them on a computer or water-bottle and admire them continuously.
Along with sustainability I deeply believe in creating accessible art. While I don't have access to a pottery studio, I do have the means to design and create stickers. For art consumers, it might mean accessibility to purchasing pricer prints, original paintings, or ceramic pieces. Lastly, stickers are just flippin' fun.
I will continue to justify creating stickers by switching to more sustainable producers (local/small businesses), using more eco-friendly packaging, and bring more mindful in other methods of creating art.
Anyway, thanks for tuning in!
Much love,
Ally
